Pembroke Public Library is searching for a creative and dynamic individual with demonstrated enthusiasm towards the mission of the library for the position of Circulation Assistant. This is a casual, part-time position of 10-18 hours per week.

 

The Circulation Assistant assists in the full range of library services including providing direct service to patrons as well as performing basic clerical and circulation-related tasks as well as all other duties as assigned by the CEO.

 

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Operates the automated library circulation system to check materials in and out, registers new members, collects membership fees and issues receipts when necessary, collects fines when necessary, manages reserves and holds and other public service duties as they arise
  • Records all monies received and disbursed at the circulation desk
  • Assists in preparing and promoting library programs and services
  • Responsible for book processing and mending
  • Assists in organizing library materials (shelving and shelf reading).
  • Assists in packing and unpacking inter-library loan materials for shipping and receiving and assists with the pick list (pulling books & DVDs from shelves for other libraries)
  • Assists patrons in the use of library equipment, inquiries and registration for library programs
  • Answers patron inquires in person, by email or by phone or redirects to appropriate staff members
  • Assists in monitoring the behaviour of library patrons
  • Shares responsibility for opening and closing procedures
  • Notifies appropriate staff members and CEO in cases of emergency or patron issues
  • Cooperates as a team member in performing duties essential to the achievement of efficient library operations
  • Follows library policies and procedures
  • Maintains a high level of confidentiality
  • Works with limited supervision
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Required:

  • High school education or equivalent
  • Knowledge of PCs, MS Office software applications and the internet
  • Ability to use a variety of office equipment
  • Willing to work with patrons in a friendly and tactful manner
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Ability to take initiative and use good judgment and discretion in making decisions and referring questions
  • Ability to organize job duties and work independently to follow a task through to completion
  • Ability to contribute to a positive work culture that fosters excellent customer service and teamwork
  • Flexible, with the capacity to adapt to change
  • Comfortable in assisting and accommodating a diverse range of library users, including those with accessibility requirements and special needs
  • Understand accessibility principles of dignity, independence, integration and equal opportunity
  • Able to push a loaded book cart and lift or maneuver cart loads up to 50 pounds

 

Assets:

  • Experience working with the public
  • Knowledge of current library practices
  • Driver’s licence and a reliable vehicle
Additional Information
This opportunity requires daytime, evening and weekend shifts (based on work schedules). The successful candidate will be required to obtain a criminal record check for work with the vulnerable sector.
