Description:
Pembroke MDF Inc. is a privately owned company, located just outside Pembroke. Our facility utilizes high quality wood fiber supplied by local sawmills to manufacture high quality fibreboard and painted base board mouldings. Unlike other types of wood panels, the homogenous and uniform structure of fibreboard results in a product that is easily routed, milled and finished.

We currently have an opportunity for the right individual to join our dynamic and talented team of employees as: Emission – Environmental Support.

Reporting to the Quality Manager the Emission – Environmental Support will complete environmental and emissions testing using the Dynamic Micro-chamber, sampling different sources, develop, implement and ensure adherence through monitoring internal controls to comply with company policies, procedures and regulatory agency requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Emission:

  • Ensure standards for safe working conditions are observed
  • Develop a correlation curve to Large Chamber Test ASTM procedure and data generated by a third-party certifier using the DMC (Dynamic Micro chamber) small chamber method
  • Maintain formaldehyde emission testing equipment
  • Contact proper sources of help and information when equipment problems arise
  • Develop and maintain procedures regarding DMC operations
  • Train individuals on the DMC for vacation and sick coverage
  • Test board samples
  • Check if all the process changes have an emission sample
  • Ensure isolation of material that is out of compliance and report on issues
  • Keep up-to-date records on testing and maintain continual contact with a certification agent
  • Update and maintain the current “Mill Quality Control Manual “for the emissions/formaldehyde program
  • Maintain working knowledge of, and effectively implement, company policies, procedures, and government regulations
  • Receive training to keep current with equipment improvements via study manuals, seminars, etc.
  • Act as the primary contact for sales and customer inquiries regarding third party certifier related topics.
  • Conduct air quality testing as requested (background test)
  • Communicate internally with staff air quality results
  • Maintain air quality testing equipment

Environmental:

  • Assist with daily water monitoring (potable, process and storm water)
  • Assist in monthly sampling of surface and ground water sampling locations
  • Collect samples in the field, under various weather conditions – Hot and Cold
  • Collect field measurements using a pH meter and an O2/Conduction/Temperature meter
  • Prep bottles for shipment to offsite laboratory
  • Collect/compile operator and area check sheet
  • Monitor outside dumpster (large bins for metal, domestic, cardboard, wood)
  • Keep inventory of waste drums and other misc. hazardous waste around the site
  • Identify and label drums that are missing or have damaged labels; report improperly labeled or shred drums to the Environmental Coordinator
  • Report miss-managed waste (items in the wrong bin) to the Environmental Coordinator or Shift Team Lead
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Other:

  • Chemistry testing for raw materials (resin/wax)
  • Board analysis (grit test)
  • Maintains respectful communication with co-workers and supervisory staff
  • Familiar with the Company’s policies/processes and understands the impact of this position on the competitiveness and performance of the company
  • Complies with and follows health and safety policies and programs
Qualifications
  • Post-secondary education related to environmental or chemical analysis
  • Entry level position; work related experience would be considered an asset
  • Knowledge of chemistry
  • Knowledge of Ontario Environmental regulations
  • Excellent organization, analytical, time-management and multi-tasking skills
  • Detail oriented and enjoy a fast-paced environment that includes deadlines and the need for accuracy
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with utmost confidentiality
  • Effective and timely resolution of queries
  • Good problem solving and analytical skills
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Competent with all Microsoft Office products (particularly Excel and Word)
  • Strong team player, capable of performing in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • High standards of business and personal integrity
