Finishing Technician
Pembroke MDF Inc. – Pembroke, ON
The successful candidate will:
GRADER
- Line set-up from 2nd pass saws to reject bin. Make sure saw support tables are in place and pinch wheels are in proper position for thickness running
- Know all grading specs and be able to identify all downgrade material
- Set up in a quick and timely manner
- Understand function of sensors on line
- Record downgrade and batch information correctly. If information isn’t available ask sander operator to estimate information for DQR
- Effective clear communication between packager and sander
- Bring quality concerns to Team Leader and Quality Process Leader’s attention
- Take lead in Quality
- Clean off sensors at beginning of shift and throughout shift as needed
- Measure panels at beginning of each batch and report discrepancies to sander operator (Tolerance of +/- 1/32″)
- Perform visual inspection of grade line at least once per shift (oil leaks, end squares)
- Rotate with other team members when moulding is being run
- Assist in troubleshooting the line during downtime
- Assist with belt changes
- Manage edge printer and consumables
- If questioning board quality, call Sander first then Process Leader and/or Team Leader
- If downgrading for more than 30 panels, collect a sample and have it labeled and set aside, then call sander, Quality Process Leader and Team Leader
- Position yourself so you can view the entire panel for edge fissures, un-sanded edge, no trim
- Maintain a clean and tidy work area
- Performs other duties as assigned
STRAPPER
- Confirm with sander operator what tags need to be made, (double check each batch in Finishing schedule)
- Look up in ERP system where the same product is stored in the warehouse. Inform the fork lift operator so he/she can keep all of the same product together in the warehouse
- Ensure product conforms to specs, proper product codes, Thickness, # of boards, Quality, no damage
- Ensure quality Strapper checks are complete and entered as per procedure
- Ensure all supplies are filled i.e.: dunnage, edge protectors, strap, cardboard
- Look ahead to set up for next batch and be prepared for next batch
- Check the first three lifts of every batch for conformance and then as instructed in the Mic Frequency for chart finishing
- Check length, width, thickness, squareness, and for chatter
- Check each lift for visual defects, piece count and that edge print is correct
- Communicate with forklift operator any changes in product
- Look for special information for orders, piece count, product code, bottom boards
- Check batch and ensure that the tally sheet is correct. Confirm with sander operator
- Clean Strapper head every 6 hours and record
- Help the forklift operator to make up jags from the end of runs
- Label board for jag rack, length, width, thickness, and grade
- Ensure non-conforming material is tagged and recorded properly, on hold material matches grader and sander tally sheets
- Rotate with other team members when moulding is being run
- Assist in troubleshooting the line during downtime
- Assist with belt changes
- Complete shift reports and tally sheets accurately
- Communicate with shipping on a regular basis to optimize warehouse space
- Complete necessary Inventory Loss Forms
- If questioning board quality, call Sander, QPL and the Team Leader
- Maintain a clean and tidy work area
- Perform all other duties as assigned or requested
FORKLIFT OPERATOR
- Ensure line continues to flow, reject is strapped, dunnage rack is full, edge protectors loaded, lifts off bunks, cardboard available
- Circle check done on forklift every shift
- Ensure warehouse locations are accurate and organized
- Ensure lifts have proper dunnage, tagged properly, edge protectors in place, proper paint strip when needed, cardboard on
- Strap reject and store in appropriate place
- Organize jags, have jags prepared before the end of batch to save time
- Move “On Hold” material into warehouse
- Feed board breaker
- Complete warehouse moves sheets and jag sheets accurately
- Rotate with other team members when moulding is being run
- Communicate warehouse locations with packager and double check tally sheets
- Assist in troubleshooting the line during downtime
- Assist with belt changes when needed
- Maintain a clean and tidy work area
- Perform all other duties as assigned or requested

Education:
- Proof of High School diploma, GED or equivalent and/or acceptable work experience
Skills:
- Experience in operating different automated machines and equipment (i.e. saws, automated paint equipment, strapping and wrapping equipment)
- Mechanically inclined
- Forklift experience is an asset
- Good computer skills
- Good written and oral communication skills
- Strong mathematical skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Ability to present ideas in business-friendly and user-friendly language
