Location: Pembroke, Ontario
Posted: May 9th 2025
Description:
Columbus House Pembroke is a non-profit organization. We offer a residential program for youth with a focus on education and teaching independent living skills. All residents are also involved in our Teen Compass (unplugged) Outdoor Leadership Program. This program provides our youth with experiences in an outdoor setting (ie Algonquin Park) while being unplugged for the daily use of technology.

We are looking for a creative and passionate person to join our team as a Youth Care Worker as a part-time position. This role may include day, evening and overnight (sleeping) shifts during the week and on weekends. This is for a vacant position within the agency.

About The Role

The residential program is a voluntary program, and youth come from a variety of backgrounds. They are able to manage the day-to-day routine of life (no restraining or one-to-one care needed). Youth come to the program with the same goal – to learn independent living skills while completing their education.

Our goal is to provide the support and guidance they require to accomplish their goals and to celebrate these achievements with them! Our staff bring their education along with their experience in a variety of extracurricular activities (ie. art, hiking, baking, sports, etc.) as well as their ability to listen, empathize, share their time and knowledge, and of course use their sense of humour.

Responsibilities:

  • Working with the youth in the residence in the role of assisting with day-to-day tasks
  • Providing informal counselling and making referrals
  • Being part of a client-centred program offering individual support
  • Facilitating the acquisition of life skills, including healthy lifestyle, appointment management, cooking, budgeting and accessing educational and employment resources
  • Assisting in the development of a healthy social network of family and interpersonal relationships
  • Assisting with the planning and attending of residential trips in the outdoor program
Qualifications
  • Social service worker diploma, child youth worker diploma or a diploma or degree in a related field
  • Students in their second year of study are welcome to apply as well
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Ability to work independently and be effective in crisis situations
  • Must have and maintain a valid Ontario driver’s licence
  • Experience working with youth or “at risk” populations is an asset
  • Bilingualism is an asset

A clear criminal reference check is necessary for the successful applicant.
