Renfrew County is located in the heart of the Ottawa Valley in Eastern Ontario and stretches from the outskirts of Canada’s capital. The district covers an area that reaches to Deep River in the northwest, Arnprior in the east and the edges of Algonquin Park in the south.

We are recruiting for a Communications Officer. This is a full-time position working 35 hours per week.

The Communications Officer will coordinate the development and implementation of a system-wide communications plan that links to the multi-year strategic plan and the annual department action plan. The Communications Officer will also manage communications issues and requirements, on an ongoing basis with a focus on both proactive and reactive strategies.

Key Responsibilities

Content Creation & Digital Engagement

  • Lead the creation of dynamic content across digital platforms
  • Manage and enhance the board’s website, social media, digital signage, and email marketing
  • Design and analyze advertising campaigns using compelling stories, photos, and videos.

Media & Public Relations

  • Serve as the primary contact for media inquiries and promote positive news stories
  • Draft media releases, organize media events, and maintain strong relationships with local and regional media outlets
  • Provide media coaching to staff and students to help them confidently represent the board in interviews and public appearances

Strategic & Crisis Communications

  • Develop and implement a strategic communications and marketing plan
  • Lead crisis communication efforts
  • Monitor communication trends and analytics to inform strategy, adjust campaigns, and improve outreach effectiveness

Internal & Board Communications

  • Craft and distribute internal messages that foster staff morale, inform families, and support a strong culture
  • Coordinate communications for board and committee meetings, including recording, messaging, and public-facing reports
  • Contribute to the annual report and key district publications

Collaboration & Support

  • Advise schools and departments on marketing and communications strategies
  • Maintain consistent use of branding and communication tools across the district
  • Support initiatives that elevate student voice, recognize staff contributions, and strengthen community engagement

Qualifications
  • A minimum of a post-secondary diploma (degree preferred) in communications, marketing, public relations or a related field
  • A minimum of two years of related experience
  • Comprehensive knowledge of graphic design and printing fundamentals
  • Knowledge of software including database, spreadsheet, word processing, Publisher, PowerPoint and Whiteboard technology experience
  • Superior oral and written communication skills, and presentation skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with particular attention to detail
  • The ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills
  • Excel in building strong relationships
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • A high level of professionalism and the ability to handle confidential and sensitive matters
  • Knowledge of the education sector is an asset
